Herodotus
In this, the first prose history in European civilization, Herodotus tells the heroic tale of the Greeks' resistance to the vast invading force assembled by Xerxes, King of Persia. Here are not only the great battles - Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis - but also penetrating human insight and a powerful sense of epic destiny at work. Translated by George Rawlinson.

If Herodotus had been an Englishman, he might have sounded like Roy Marsden, the performer in this audiobook version of The Persian War. An epic prose history cut from the pages of Herodotus, the fifth-century B.C. Greek called "The Father of History" from ancient times to the present, The Persian War recounts the exploits of Darius the Great’s 50-year attempt to punish Athens for the Ionian Revolt against Persian rule. Filled with naval battles, old world eloquence, and even an appropriately nostalgic, eastern-themed musical score, The Persian War is a worthy audiobook presentation of the work that invented history as a viable practice.
