Acerca de este título
Jeffrey R. Romer, talked with his mother often about Hitler conquering Europe and Japan conquering the South Pacific. He asked her, "Am I to go to war?" Her reply "Many will have to."Night and morning, JR read news of Germany bombing London in 1939 and 1940, and Royal Air Force Spitfire fighters fighting German Stukas over the English Channel. He listened to NBC, CBS, and ABC radio news of Japan conquering East Asia. One morning in winter 1941, JR walked into the US Navy enlistment office in Kansas City. He completed the enlistment application including that his father taught him to fly the Butler Warhawk biplane before he died. The enlistment officer designated JR for Navy fighter pilot training in Norman, Oklahoma.JR survived the battles of Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, Okinawa. Spent thirty-five days alone in a raft on the vast South Pacific. Been in a Japanese prison war camp with unlocked gates. Sung to by Māori school children. A burst of gunfire through a cockpit floor should have killed him outright but didn't.He returned home to Liberty, Missouri, 1946 to his mother's kitchen and her angel on top the Christmas tree. He carried a letter guiding him to Calcutta to talk to a man named Dyong who built railroads in South Africa. The African continent would ask of JR Romer things the vast Pacific war never did.©2026 Hugh Winfield (P)2026 Hugh Winfield Guerra y ejército Guerras y conflictos Literatura de género Militar
