This is a story from the Grimms' Fairy Tales 2 collection.
Jacob and Wilhelm's first book of fairy tales, Children's and Household Tales, published in 1812, included 86 folktales and was an instant success. Shortly thereafter, the brothers incorporated 70 more stories in their next volume of Grimms' Fairy Tales. This continued for six more editions! The complete collection contains over 200 stories, and is probably the best-known work of German literature.

When a poor man's son shows great bravery in battle, he earns the king's daughter's hand in marriage. Unfortunate events ensue, though, involving crypts, snakes, and sinking ships. Dramatic music and sound effects highlight the dark turns. Laura Paton gives a straightforward performance without intrusive over-dramatization. Her playful pacing keeps the story flowing. With substantial acting experience, Paton knows how to give her characters distinct voices, too. Youngest listeners may find moments a bit scary, but in typical Brothers Grimm fashion, the good live happily ever after while the bad suffer and die.
