Nursing is one of the oldest and most respected professions, rooted in the fundamental human need for care and compassion. Its history stretches back to ancient civilizations, where care for the sick was often intertwined with religious or spiritual practices. In ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, care was provided within families or by religious figures, with healing temples serving as early hospitals. However, these early forms of nursing were not formalized, and care was often based on a combination of traditional remedies and spiritual rituals.
The professionalization of nursing began in earnest in the 19th century with the work of Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing. Her experiences during the Crimean War highlighted the importance of hygiene, nutrition, and compassionate care in improving patient outcomes. Nightingale’s emphasis on systematic observation, record-keeping, and patient advocacy set the standard for modern nursing practices. Her work led to the establishment of the first formal nursing schools, which spread rapidly throughout Europe and the Americas, laying the foundation for the global nursing profession we know today.
