Four of the great works of mythology and legend, brought together! Learn the stories of Odin, Thor, Loki, Seigfried, and Beowulf, in their earliest written forms. Encounter gods, giants, dragons, and monsters. Thrill to the tales that have captured the human imagination for over a thousand years.
Norse and Germanic mythology are cousins, sharing themes, settings, and characters. The Poetic Edda was likely composed in Scandinavia by bards singing of their gods and heroes. The Prose Edda was composed in Iceland, by a scholar seeking to combine these songs into a coherent and easily readable whole. The Volsung Saga is also Norse, tracing the adventures and tragedies of a royal family. Beowulf is a Germanic poem which takes place in Norse lands with Norse characters. Now you can compare and contrast these myths yourself, all while being swept away by their colorful characters, epic adventures, and sombre winter atmosphere. With several new essays providing historical context, including an extensive explanation of the background lore in the Beowulf poem!
