What if the true measure of wealth is not money, but human life?

In Unto This Last, influential Victorian critic and social thinker John Ruskin challenges the foundations of classical political economy and asks a deceptively simple question: What is an economy actually for?

Across four essays—“The Roots of Honour,” “The Veins of Wealth,” “Qui Judicatis Terram,” and “Ad Valorem”—Ruskin rejects the idea that human beings can be understood merely as self-interested economic actors. Commerce, labor, wages, and wealth, he argues, cannot be separated from morality, justice, responsibility, and human well-being.

Ruskin examines the relationship between employers and workers, challenges conventional definitions of value and productivity, and condemns economic systems that accumulate material riches while leaving people impoverished in health, dignity, or opportunity. His argument culminates in one of his most enduring declarations: “There is no wealth but life.”

Originally published as four controversial essays in Cornhill Magazine in 1860 and collected in book form in 1862, Unto This Last became one of Ruskin’s most influential works of social criticism. It remains a provocative examination of capitalism, labor, economic justice, and the moral responsibilities behind the creation of wealth.

Narrated by Wayne Champion.
