On May 20, 1890, after leaving the asylum in Saint-Rémy in the south of France, the Dutch painter arrived in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise, near Paris, where his brother, Theo, had placed him in the care of Dr. Paul Gachet, well known as physician and patron painters. A frequent guest in the Gachet household, Vincent came to know the doctor’s 20-year-old daughter, Marguerite. Was there a romance as she later claimed? What were the true circumstances of the artist’s death from a gunshot wound less than three months later? Here, in Jerrine Wire’s richly imagined novel, is Marguerite’s own vivid account of creative genius and tragic love that will grip the listener through to its shocking conclusion.
