It has been said that the number of women who served as soldiers, both North and South, approached 400. It is known that a large number of women disguised themselves and enlisted in the service, for one cause or another. Entrenched in secrecy, and regarded as men, they were sometimes revealed as women, by pregnancy or casualty.

In 2018, artist and activist Erin Darcy launched In Her Shoes – Women of the Eighth, an online project where Irish women anonymously shared the realities of abortion under the Eighth Amendment. Within months, hundreds of stories poured in, breaking decades of taboo and helping shift public opinion before Ireland's historic vote to repeal the Amendment that May. Garnering over 100,000 followers and global media attention, the project became both a national reckoning and a personal act of healing for Darcy, who transformed grief into activism.

Valerie Andre was born in Strasbourg, France, in 1922. From an early age, she wanted to fly, but as a woman, she faced challenges. While boys could receive government-funded flight lessons, Andre had to pay for hers by tutoring. During World War II, she left Strasbourg against German prohibitions in order to study medicine in Paris, where she completed her studies under threat of arrest by the Gestapo. Assigned to an army hospital in Saigon in French Indochina in the late 1940s, Andre trained as a neurosurgeon. 

Women have bravely served in the US Navy for nearly a century, but they have been allowed to serve in combat roles for only the last 25 years. When the combat exclusion law was lifted in 1993, women in the navy soon had a new range of opportunities available to them. The repeal of the law finally gave women the chance to serve on combatant ships for the first time. Among the first women to step onto these warships as a new crewmember was Joanna Sprtel Walters.
