Die Geschichten von Münchhausen gehören in die Tradition der Lügengeschichten, die weit ins klassische Altertum und in die Erzähltradition des Judentums zurückgeht. Die Lügenerzählungen des historischen Karl Friedrich Hieronymus Freiherr von Münchhausen wurden von einem anonymen Autor niedergeschrieben und 1781 veröffentlicht. In Form einer englischen Übersetzung, die Rudolf Erich Raspe angefertigt hatte, gelangten sie zu Gottfried August Bürger, der sie zurück ins Deutsche übersetzte und frei bearbeitete.

Wer kennt sie nicht? Die Phantastereien des Baron Münchhausens sind weltbekannt. Er gehört zu den bekanntesten literarischen Figuren aller Zeiten, und geht zurück auf einen anonymen Text, der erstmals im Jahr 1781 in einem Sammelband erschienen ist. Es ist möglich, dass dieser Text vom echten Baron Münchhausen stammt. Gottfried August Bürger adaptierte fünf Jahre später den Stoff für das Buch, das die tolldreisten Phantasiegeschichten des Barons schildert und zu einem Bestseller wurde. Die Buchvorlage wurde von Heinz Schimmelpfennig (1919-2010) leicht gekürzt und eingelesen.
