Worthing, 1933 Ruby Bateman works at the prestigious Warnes Hotel on Worthing seafront. She enjoys her job and the camaraderie with the girls at the hotel, but she also loves a day off.... On an outing to the Sussex Downs, Ruby meets handsome photographer Jim Searle and instantly falls for him. The only cloud to overshadow her otherwise perfect trip is the dark mood of her father when she returns home. It's the first of many clouds to loom threateningly over the hardworking Bateman family.

Two roads converge and two journeys end at a small, unpromising town called Stoneridge on the high plains of northeast Colorado. Roy Mathis is headed there by car, his head full of inchoate memories and reveries in search of his father, his sister, and context for a fragmented life. Fleeing his mother, who refuses to tell him anything that would help him in his quest, Roy sets his sights on the only desperate hope for a clue in the forgotten whistle-stop town.

Jane is missing. Taken by a serial killed known only as the Sandman, Tempest and friends must unravel the clues to find her before night falls. Why so soon? Because that is when he kills his victims, bringing them dreams as he sings them to sleep, just like in the song. The police won’t even acknowledge the serial killer exists which leaves them on their own, sifting through Jane’s notes and piecing together fractured clues and half-baked theories in a desperate scramble to find the man at the core of this mystery. However, the Sandman wants to be found.
