Dragged from his now peaceful existence, former military scout Holton Lang invests himself in the search for the stolen captives as well as the difficult task of keeping the young man alive. As the search continues across three states, Holton comes across old friends and finds new meaning in life as his job of survival embraces a newfound kinship.

Coming out of amnesia suffered during the Civil War, she recognized who her lover, Matt Jorgensen, was but had no idea how to find him. After having established a new life for herself with a new family, she discovers from her grandmother that she has a supernatural gift and is compelled to leave her comfortable lifestyle to search for Matt. With a thin bankroll, they were looking to earn some fast money to continue their hunt for a Civil War guerilla who’d killed their comrades and stolen a fortune in Confederate gold, a fortune they themselves planned to get their hands on. So Brazos pinned on the sheriff’s badge in return for a hundred dollars a month, and soon found himself taking his responsibilities more seriously than he’d thought possible!

They were an odd pair, the one-time Union captain and the former Confederate sergeant. They’d fought each other during the Battle of Pea Ridge...and then ended up fighting shoulder to shoulder when a common enemy showed his face. Bo Rangle, leader of the guerilla force known as Rangle’s Raiders, took advantage of the slaughter to steal what the two opposing forces had been fighting for - 200,000 dollars’ worth of Confederate gold.

Matt Anderson was dead, shot down in a bank hold-up that shocked the small community of Bozeman, Montana. At least the townsfolk thought he was dead. A case of mistaken identity may have saved Matt's life, but it would have to be a life lived in exile.

Colonel Benjamin Franklin Terry was killed and his successor, Colonel Thomas Lubbock, died immediately afterwards of camp fever. Still, one of the greatest cavalry units in the Civil War looked onward towards victory with the leadership of two more unbeatable heroic officers, General Albert Sidney Johnston, and General John Austin Wharton, together with two rugged cowboys who knew something about guns and horses.

Ginny was dead; killed by a young Federal soldier's musket ball that sent a call for revenge to Matt Jorgensen, a cowboy on the run from the law from Montana. However, convinced that his sweetheart was still alive, he was determined to find her. Discovering himself deep in the heart of Texas when the Civil War broke out, Matt enlisted in the Texas 8th Cavalry with his newfound sidekick, Steve Andrews, only to find out that the cavalry had no horses and no authority to fight in the war.

While attempting to join up with her lover Matt Jorgensen as he joins Confederate Calvary, Ginny McBride is hit by a musketball from a Union rifle. She develops amnesia, losing all memory as to who and where she is. Matt spends his military time trying to find her. When she returns to herself, she in turn tries to find Matt. It is a story that also engulfs the Western folklore of Jesse James, Cole Younger and his brothers and Belle (Starr) Shirley as they became legends.
