With entire star systems in ruins and others cut off from accessing the Cascade for faster-than-light travel, there's no shortage of damage to go around.

Albert Jenkins and his friends have enjoyed several months of peace, which is why when a Rosengul spaceship crash-lands into his new house, he's not exactly surprised. From the wreckage, a pair of ordinarily reclusive small Rosengul emerge and spin a tale of kidnapping and deceit. Of course, AJ, not always the most sensitive, asks the pertinent question of how that involves him and his friends. The simple answer is that AJ and crew have developed a reputation of getting things done, probably because his methods skirt Galactic Empire rules.

With the first real battle on Penthos raging around him, Azra can't get his mind off of Elise. He fears for her safety, but just as much, he fears that she will not be able to handle everything that is happening around them and that he will lose her. As the warriors fall around him, though, he knows that he has to focus on his mission there and not allow himself to let the Denynso, or any of the rest, down.

With the journey to Penthos nearly over, Rilex and newly-named Severine wake in each other's arms. Now that Maxim has revealed the change of his skin and Ciyrs has administered his own vicious test, the warriors are convinced that they are witnessing the second coming of these grotesque enemies, and Pyra knows that he has to take control. His methods, however, prove destructive, and soon Maxim and Ivy have to make decisions that will determine the course of the rest of their lives.

With the hatching of the Covra young beginning, the group from the Denynso compound is hurrying to get to the settlement as fast as they can. When a comment from Ivy makes Zsilvia think differently about the Light Ones and their locked state, a single communication with the men changes everything. Now the warriors are fighting a battle they hadn't prepared to fight, and together, they must decide whether it is more important to preserve lives that began long ago, or eliminate the threat to those who are still just getting started.
