Easily one of the most recognisable pop singers from the '90s, thanks to his trademark style, the founder, front man and sole consistent member of Pulp, Jarvis Cocker, is deeply ingrained in the world of music. He has written for The Guardian and presented the BBC Radio 6 Music show, Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service, for seven years. Raised in Depression-era New York City by leftist, working-class, secular Jewish parents, Gilbert is best known as a member of the Weavers, the quartet of the 1950s and '60s that survived the blacklist and helped popularize folk music in America.

At the time of Buddy Holly's birth in 1936, in Lubbock Texas, rock music and its various hybrid genres were in early infancy. Signs of rock's future magnitude would soon be seen in the sexual charisma of the young Elvis Presley, the rhythm and passion of Chuck Berry, the riveting musical dialogues of Little Richard, and the raw virtuosity of Jerry Lee Lewis. Even then, however, no one yet knew what a rock star really was, and who could become one.
