When they get into a car accident on the way to Oklahoma, Alec and Elaina's group must travel by foot. They find shelter in a farmhouse that lacks running water and electricity, but it's stocked with limited medical supplies. Alec and Elaina leave the group to find a hospital, fighting off the infected along the way. They get ahold of Elaina's mentor over the phone who can help them evacuate, but they only have 24 hours to get everyone to the hospital.

A deadly virus has been unleashed. A virus so vicious that it reduces the infected to a terrifying version of themselves that could lead to the end of our race as we know it. Elaina has been identified as the point of transmission and the reason for the chaos and havoc. She created the virus and let it out. Now, more than just the infected would like to see her head served up on a platter.

When the military safe-zone is overrun, the group must escape, carrying with them their own internal tensions. Alec blames Elaina for the release of the virus. Natalia hates her father for leaving her. Will is tormented by memories of his family killing each other. And worst of all, Elaina is infected with the virus. When the group splinters, two will find refuge in an abandoned town hosted by a rogue group of soldiers, it seems. Is it possible they've found a safe space, or is there evil lurking there, about to unfold? Before they discover the answer, they will lose one of their own.

Matthew, Carl, and Sergio brave the toughest obstacles on the road in this new world. Nothing could have prepared them for what they would encounter.
