The situation darkens with a second murder and a series of break-ins, including at Peter’s house and clinic, but Peter has a hard time knowing when he is out of his depth, despite warnings from his brother-in-law Kevin, an RCMP officer.

Mombert Gryn zu Frenz ist das schwarze Schaf seiner Familie. Obwohl als Sohn eines altehrwürdigen rheinischen Adelsgeschlechts geboren, arbeitet er als Agrarkontrolleur beim Landwirtschaftsamt Meckenheim. Ganz zum Leidwesen seiner Familie lebt er zudem in einem Bauwagen in der Nähe des Kottenforst. In diesem Wald stolpert Mombert auch mitten hinein in seinen ersten Mordfall, als auf einer Lichtung ein Bauer tot aufgefunden wird - angeblich vom Blitz erschlagen. Mombert merkt schnell, dass an der Sache etwas faul ist, und so begibt er sich heimlich auf Spurensuche.
