Eighty-two-year-old Mish Atkinson from Fair Valley, West Virginia, is determined she’s going to make something of the time she has left on this earth. Temple Silver runs the Normal Motel, where the bar serves as the local hangout for the good ol’ townspeople in Oxhope who want to maintain their separate peace. But tensions rise with James’s arrival as the first Black student to enroll in the local university.
