Patient is a quirky, humorous, and occasionally poignant romp through the American health care system. After a seemingly mild case of COVID-19, the author finds himself hospitalized with acute renal failure. The connection to COVID-19 is tenuous at best, yet he is examined from head to toe with the ruthless efficiency that only a hospital with the latest technology can accomplish. Scans and tests of every possible type are conducted, eliminating the most dire of diagnoses.

He never saw the moment on the end of his bed thinking about the nature of the world resulting in him losing touch with reality. But it was the moment he broke through the pressures in the west: to be better, work harder, and ultimately chase your dreams. That he realized nothing meant anything. The only purpose in life was to laugh when something was funny, cry when something was sad, eat when you were hungry, and enjoy every fleeting moment. Being a disciplined, calculated, accomplished engineer, this new paradigm didn’t fit in with the persona he had spent a lifetime creating.

Recalling remarkable cases - and people - from a career launched in the first days of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Paul Seward leads us in his memoir through suspenseful diagnoses and explorations of anatomy. Within the conditions of great stress and rapid decision-making that are routine in the ER, Dr. Seward tells us that medical staff must be more than technicians of the body: They must be restorers of the human.

When you or someone you love is diagnosed with cancer it feels like your whole world is falling apart. Not knowing what will happen next is terrifying, and that is the main reason I wrote this book, hoping that my experience could help others. The first title of this book was, “My body is weak but my mind is strong”, starting out as a story about my personal battle with cancer, and that was the mantra I used to hype myself up before my final chemotherapy session.
