John Edgar Hoover (January 1, 1895 - May 2, 1972) was an American law enforcement administrator who, after being appointed by President Calvin Coolidge in 1924 as the fifth and final director of the Bureau of Investigation (BOI), became the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 1935, where he remained until his death in May 1972—serving a total of 48 years leading both the BOI and the FBI under eight presidents.

A year later, on November 27, 1978, Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by disgruntled former City Supervisor Dan White in the offices of San Francisco's City Hall. Barry Morris Goldwater (January 2, 1909 to May 29, 1998) was an American politician and major general in the US Air Force, flying dangerous war zone supply routes overseas during World War II, who served as a United States senator from 1953 to 1965 and 1969 to 1987, and was the Republican Party's nominee for president in 1964. A Soviet journalist dubbed her the "Iron Lady", a nickname that became associated with her uncompromising politics and leadership style. Archibald James Carey Jr. (February 29, 1908-April 20, 1981) was an American lawyer, judge, politician, diplomat, and clergyman from the South Side of Chicago. He was elected as a city alderman and served for eight years. In 1957, he was appointed by President Dwight Eisenhower as chair of his committee on government employment policy, which worked to reduce racial discrimination. Huey Pierce Long Jr. (August 30, 1893-September 10, 1935), nicknamed "The Kingfish", was an American politician who served as the 40th governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and as a United States senator from 1932 until his assassination in 1935. He was a left-wing populist member of the Democratic Party and rose to national prominence during the Great Depression for his vocal criticism of President Franklin D.
