Mildred Gillars, nicknamed "Axis Sally," was an American broadcaster employed by Nazi Germany to disseminate propaganda during World War II. Following her capture after the war, she became the first woman to be convicted of treason against the United States. In March 1949, she was sentenced to ten to thirty years' imprisonment. She was released early in 1961. After being granted probation, Mildred converted to the Catholic faith and lived at the Our Lady Of Bethlehem Abbey in Columbus Ohio for several years.

Lord Haw-Haw was a nickname given to the American-born Brit, William Joyce, who broadcast Nazi propaganda to Britain from Germany during the Second World War. Lord Haw-Haw was a Nazi broadcaster during World War II. Joyce emigrated to Germany and broadcast Nazi messages for several years. The Reich Ministry of Propaganda used these broadcasts to discourage and demoralize Allied forces and the British population by exaggerating their war losses. Up to 60 percent of the British population actually tuned in to Lord Haw-Haw's broadcasts. They lasted from 1939-1945.

George Catlett Marshall Jr. (December 31, 1880-October 16, 1959) rose to become Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army during World War II under Presidents FDR and Truman, later serving as Secretary of State and Secretary of Defense under Truman. As Secretary of State, Marshall advocated for a U.S. economic and political commitment to post-war European recovery, including the Marshall Plan that bore his name. In recognition of this work, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953, the only Army general ever to receive the honor.

In the first thirty or forty years of the twentieth century, a number of aging Confederate veterans got together for reunions and recorded their versions of the Rebel Yell. He enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1862 and served in the 24th Virginia Cavalry until 1864 when his regiment was moved to the north of Richmond as Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant fought near Petersburg. After the war, he became an educator, preserving the memories of the Confederate soldier and serving as Commander-in-Chief of the United Confederate Veterans for decades. In 1947, he gave the following recording about his wartime experiences. He died a year later at the age of 102.

When Adolf Hitler continued his aggression by invading Poland, Britain declared war on Germany on 3 September 1939, and Chamberlain led Britain through the first eight months of the Second World War.

Abraham Lincoln's carefully crafted Gettysburg Address was originally meant to be secondary to other presentations that day, following on as it did from a two hour speech by the orator Edward Everett. In it's short span, Lincoln reiterated the principles of human equality espoused by the Declaration of Independence and proclaimed the Civil War as a struggle for the preservation of the Union sundered by the secession crisis.

Albert Henry Woolson was the last known surviving member of the Union Army who served in the American Civil War; he was also the last surviving Civil War veteran on either side whose status is undisputed. Albert enlisted as a drummer boy in Company C, 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery Regiment on October 10, 1864. Woolson returned to Minnesota, where he lived the rest of his life as a carpenter and, later, as a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, a powerful political organization made up of Civil War veterans.
