Richard Burton reads Shakespeare's narrative poem about the legendary Lucretia (or 'Lucrece'). The poem tells the story of the Roman leader Tarquin's rape of Lucrece and her subsequent suicide.

Finding from my own personal experience how troublesome it is to hunt through piles of dusty old volumes, I have decided to make a small selection of these papers which I consider are not only rare and very interesting, but which also give an insight into the varied activities and achievements of Burton’s crowded life. It will, I think, be realized that such a volume as this will not be superfluous, for, apart from saving people an enormous amount of trouble, it will give them further insight into the life-work of one of the greatest men of the Victorian era.

Written by the ancient Indian philosopher Vatsyayana sometime between the first and sixth centuries A.D., the Kama Sutra is literally translated as "Aphorisms on Love". It is intended as a manual for not only love and intimacy but also a treatise on the politics and customs of relationships between men and women. The Kama Sutra, while sought after for its instruction on sexual positions, is much more than just a guide for lovemaking. Presented here is the classic translation by Sir Richard Francis Burton.

This is a sensitive exploration of the joys and pleasures of physical consummation. The Kama Sutra has often been described as "the first sexual manual", but the original Hindu script has a strong religious basis, and highlights love in all its forms.

The 15th-century Arabian text The Perfumed Garden stands with India's The Karma Sutra as one of the greatest erotic texts in classic literature. It is primarily a manual for sexual activity of all kinds, dealing in some considerable detail with physical attributes, foreplay, coital positions and advice for how to achieve greater satisfaction for both partners, as well as sexual health. In addition, it contains some enlivening stories of sexual encounters and sexual needs fulfilled.
