Susanne Schötz is hard at work on breaking the cat code. She is a professor at Lund University in Sweden, where a long-standing research program is proving that cats do actually use vocal communication-with each other and with their human caretakers. Understanding the vocal strategies used in human-cat communication will have profound implications for how we communicate with our pets and has the potential to improve the relationship between animals and humans within several fields, including animal therapy, veterinary medicine, and animal sheltering.

Fifty-six million years ago, the earliest equid walked the earth-and beginning with the first-known horse-keepers of the Copper Age, the horse has played an integral part in human history. Combining fascinating anthropological detail and incisive personal anecdotes, Susanna Forrest draws from an immense range of archival documents as well as literature and art to illustrate how our evolution has coincided with that of horses.

I grew up in a big polygamist family, the 23rd of 46 children. My father had six wives and our very existence was a secret. We lived in the middle of Salt Lake City in a big white house on Fifth East, with neighbors to the north and south of us and yet we remained utterly hidden. Homeschooled and cut off rom the world, that secrecy was a breeding ground for abuse. While my father was gone to work during the day, his third wife, Mother Kay, sat at the head of the family, controlling the other mothers and abusing the children.

Dort unten...

Living Life Sideways paints a vivid picture of the adventure of a lifetime (a year-long, worldwide sailing journey), coupled with the fight of a lifetime. It describes one sailor’s odyssey to regain her sense of self when she realizes that her peace of mind is worth more than she could have ever imagined.

In the dramatic final book of the three-part Living Life Sideways series, the harsh effects of years of narcissistic abuse begin to take their toll as Michelle Segrest is broken down psychologically and emotionally—piece by piece—by her manipulative partner. She is forced to battle her inner demons as she struggles to rediscover her personal strength and resolve. Trapped inside the lonely darkness of depression and unsettling isolation, she must dig deep into her soul to find a way to save herself and her two devoted beagles.

Haunted by ghosts of the past, she was sailing directly into the eye of a storm. But fighting the challenges at sea was nothing compared with her complex personal struggles on an intense journey to find self-valuation. Determined to complete the life-changing odyssey, in book two of her Living Life Sideways series, Michelle Segrest’s focus turns to an extraordinary effort to salvage her crumbling relationship with a masterfully manipulative skipper.

Michelle Segrest dreamed of checking one giant challenge off her bucket list. Boarding a 43-foot sailboat to rekindle her relationship of six years, she set out on the eight-month voyage from North Germany to Alabama filled with hope. But suffering extreme seasickness and heavy gales in the Baltic proved the least of her problems when she faced abusive gaslighting from her partner. Unable to keep food down long enough to help when maintenance issues struck, Michelle’s only comfort came from her two devoted beagles.

Combining the drama of The God of Animals with the powerful realism of Chosen by a Horse, award-winning poet Jana Harris tells the inspiring story of her twenty-four-year relationship with a troubled but beautiful, blood-red feral mare who, in spite of her difficult past, has a talent for healing and helping every human and other being she comes into contact with.

A tale of love, life, and finding your way home...At age nine, as Susanna sat on a horse for the first time, an unbreakable bond was forged. It set the stage for a lifelong odyssey for this determined girl and her devotion to her equine companions.
