In the winter of 1943, a train from Warsaw bound for the Treblinka death camp went missing. Now, in modern-day Poland, the train still haunts the countryside, luring people to leave their homes and step aboard. A group of American travelers with a penchant for ghost hunting decide to look into the disappearances, only to discover a plot that could change the world, and that the Ghost Train's origins reach much further back than the Holocaust.

But on the night the men of the island disappear while fishing in uncharted waters, the women are forced into a conflict with something both new and unfathomably old. A strange greenish mist rolls in, cutting off the island from the mainland. Spiral symbols appear in the sand, fashioned from dead fish and stones.

The events which killed dozens of people and put the word "werewolf" on people's lips have been covered up. Deaths blamed on gang warfare, drugs, and costumes. A secret operation is in process to make sure that the truth about what happened in Boxford stays buried. But some things refuse to lie down and be still. There are perpetual loose ends that continue to multiply and carry on a legacy that began well before the Second World War.
