Gallifrey is in a state of crisis, facing destruction at the hands of an overwhelming enemy. He is, of course, Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, alias actor Nicholas Courtney.

The UK branch of UNIT is under threat. The government wants its own military investigative organisation, one under its sole control. The public want answers to the strange things that have been happening recently. When the division's commanding officer goes missing whilst transporting a dangerous cargo, Colonel Emily Chaudhry, UNIT's political officer, is thrown in at the deep end. Things are not helped when a series of accidents show a bizarre pattern.

Twenty-third November 2013. In an Oxford laboratory, graduate Alice Watson helps Professor Chivers assemble the final pieces of an impossible machine. A time machine. The scientist and his assistant believe they are making history, little suspecting that the project's completion will threaten the existence of the entire universe. It begins with just a few people falling ill. Another flu virus that spreads around the globe. And then the reports begin that people are dying.... When most of the world's population is wiped out, a handful of survivors are left to pick up the pieces. Cities become graveyards. Technology becomes largely obsolete. Mankind must start again.
