I wrote a fair number of poems in my younger days, saved and placed in a folder titled “King Among the Prawns”. Now that I’m self-publishing my more recent books, I decided to let these out for a ramble. Some of them I'm quite proud of, and some are fairly naff. They exist as a window on a time in my life when I was näive but learning. Along with these are a second batch, inspired by the trauma and after-effects of my brain hemorrhage and stroke in 2009, and a mental health poetry group I was introduced to shortly after my stroke; great therapy!

When I first started writing towards a new book, I never knew the direction the Holy Spirit was directing me. Usually it takes me about 50 poems to get an idea, which started forming as my journey through reading the whole Bible, which took me through Numbers and Deuteronomy.

Known by her stage name of Mademoiselle de Maupin or simply 'La Maupin' Julie was a darling of the Paris Opera under the Sun Kings patronage. Gorgeous, volatile and a crossdressing bisexual fencing master, her multiple lovers included some of Europes most powerful men and beautiful women. Amongst her many outrageous exploits was burning down the convent of the Visitandines to cover her escape with a young nun whom she had fallen in love with.
