There is a huge, bold black streak in the sky. Branches appear out of nowhere over North America, Southern Europe, and Central Africa. People who live beneath The Rift can see it. But scientists worldwide are distressed - their equipment cannot pick up any type of signal from it. The rift appears to consist of nothing. Literally. Nothing. Nada. Niente. Most people are curious but not overly concerned. The phenomenon seems to pose no danger. It is just there. Then something jolts the most hardened naysayers, and surpasses the worst nightmares of the world's greatest scientists.

By the middle of the twenty-first century, the major powers on Earth had fallen into a second Cold War centralized in cyberspace. The US has made considerable strides in artificial intelligence by introducing the first ALICE system to the world. In an effort to catch up, China and Russia pooled their total AI resources, hoping their combined technologies would meet or exceed the American systems.

When Matt was first sent to Gaia—a lifeless garden planet that had been consumed by system meddling—his only goal was to stay alive. Through a combination of grit, ingenuity, and a lot of help from his guardian, Lucy, he's managed to not only survive the worst but also thrive in a way that's revived the original Gaians. Now, others need Matt's help as well. He once had a choice between Gaia and Ra'Zor, also known as the "Realm of One Thousand Bleedings."

Matt's in the prime of his life. So when his doctor tells him he only has months to live, he figures it's just really bad luck. But it's about to get a whole lot worse. When Matt's Earthly form finally expires, a truck-avatar system gives him the opportunity to become a hero on the paradise world of Gaia, a supposedly verdant, rich land teeming with plants and potential. What he finds instead is a place completely bereft of life. A literal dead planet. Thanks a lot, truck.

Humanity might have died out once, but Isaac got a second chance at life, returning to the time when the [System] initialized. Grasping this chance with both hands, he worked tirelessly to bring his future knowledge to the masses, but even so, some disasters are inevitable.

Isaac Thoma lived to see the last handful of survivors defeat the demonic champion. He is now alone, his past in ashes, the last and most powerful human on a blighted Earth.
