The Adventure of the Gloria Scott appeared in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This story is unusual in that it is related mainly by Holmes rather than Watson. It is the very first case in which Holmes applied his powers of deduction to solve a case. Up till that time he had treated his deductive powers as a hobby.

The original collection of these stories, published in 1994 in England, did not include "The Adventure of the Cardboard Box" because it was considered "too shocking." It was later added to the first American edition.
