When Mount Vesuvius erupted in A.D. 79, it gave so little warning that Pompeiians were caught unawares, and many bodies were preserved in volcanic ash. Two thousand years later, in 2079, Pompeii is a popular theme park eagerly anticipating Il Giubeleo, the Jubilee celebration of the great anniversary. But Vesuvius is still capable of erupting, and even more threatening are terrorists who want to use the occasion to draw attention to their cause by creating a huge disaster.

In the dead of night, on the morning of March 21, 2003 a team of 12 highly-trained U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers aboard three Special Operations Chinook helicopters, flying at low-altitude, watched in awe as a barrage of Tomahawk missiles, launched from ships in the Red Sea, flew less than 300 feet over their aircraft on the way toward Baghdad, Iraq. It was the opening “Shock and Awe” salvo of the Invasion of Iraq and the soldiers of 5th Special Forces Group’s Operational Detachment Alpha (ODA) 551 were about to be dropped off for one of the most critical missions of the war.

I’d already lost a lot…too much, in fact. Unfortunately, the most difficult task still lay ahead of me—conquering the unknown regions of the Dark Lands and the hordes of foul creatures that resided there. The fact that they knew I was coming for them only made matters worse. Yet the steep price we had all paid only made one thing certain: There would be no turning back. The lives lost and blood spilled would not be in vain; the evils that plagued my home would be ended—one way or another.
