Around the World in Eighty Days is a classic adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, first published in 1873. In “The Domain of Arnheim”, Edgar Allen Poe combines an explication of his aesthetic theory and a physical description of a landscape-garden, Arnheim. The builder of Arnheim, Ellison, is described by a narrator as a fabulously wealthy man, interested “instinctively...in the creation of novel forms of Beauty”. He is interested in shaping nature, in molding it into a “purely physical loveliness.”

The narrator is interested in mesmerism, a pseudoscience involving bringing a patient into a hypnagogic state by the influence of magnetism, a process that later developed into hypnotism. He points out that, as far as he knows, no one has ever been mesmerized at the point of death, and he is curious to see what effects mesmerism would have on a dying person. He considers experimenting on his friend Ernest Valdemar, an author whom he had previously mesmerized and who has recently been diagnosed with phthisis (tuberculosis).

The main character in this story is C. Auguste Dupin, a sleuth who solves crimes by deduction. Two women have been brutally murdered and it appears that there was no way in or out of the room where the murders took place.

The anonymous narrator is suffering from a strange hypersensitivity to everything around him. He lives with an old man who has a clouded bluish eye, an abnormality that fascinates and disturbs him. Resolving to kill the man and dispose of his body, he soon realizes in horror, however, his innocent victim may never let him forget what he has done.

In this tale by sensational storyteller and poet Edgar Allen Poe, a newspaper article claims that a man by the name of Von Kempelen has discovered the alchemical process by which to turn iron into pure gold.
