Dr. Zarkov introduces himself as a Surgeon of Souls and offers Phillip a second chance if he can demonstrate that he has changed his evil philandering ways.

After the expunger's call, that person will never have existed. The protagonist, Steven Crane, finds himself thrust into the role of expunger through a simple misunderstanding in a cigar store, changing his existence and the existence of those he calls upon.

Mr Marcus Pottermack, an ingenious and meticulous gentleman, of quiet habits, is in a desperate situation: wrongfully convicted of fraud, he escaped from prison and established a new life, only to find himself in the clutches of a ruthless blackmailer. With no recourse to the law, Pottermack can see no way out—until a happy discovery within the walled garden of his home offers the means to rid himself of his tormentor forever.

George Halton, a private investigator from New York City, is hired as a bodyguard for the wealthiest family in Sleepy Hollow. There have been two gruesome murders, including that of the patriarch of the family, in the otherwise sleepy little town. The murders were particularly violent and apparently committed by a human being with superhuman strength, strong enough to tear the heads from the bodies of the victims. There are few clues as to who the individual who seems to be roaming the woods of the small town is.

Clint Morgan's "Corpseless Coffin" is a gripping mystery tale that originally appeared in "Spicy Mystery Stories", a pulp magazine in July 1937. The story follows Jim Hargrove, who falls victim to a gypsy girl's spell of madness after a rather lengthy affair.

Rick and Scotty go to work on a project at an experimental rocket installation in Nevada at the request of Dr. John Gordon. Someone has been trying to sabotage the rocker launches and leaves pictures of a knight sticking a sword through a rocket. The person calls themselves The Earthman.

In "Cat-Woman" the narrative revolves around a New York lawyer who embarks on a journey to a frozen canyon in Canada. Armed with promising news from London, he sets out to deliver it to the inhabitants of a cozy cabin nestled in the cold wilderness. However, as the story progresses, it becomes evident that there is an air of mystery and intrigue surrounding his visit.

Mistress of Satan's Hounds, by Frederick C. Davis, takes place in a small town next to a prison. There are very few escapes from this prison. It isn't because inmates can't escape, they fear being caught and mutilated by a particularly vicious pack of bloodhounds owned by a local and reclusive eccentric, Ira Clegg. Clegg seemed to gather a certain amount of perverse satisfaction when his "devil" dogs would maul another victim.

"Mistress of the Dark Pool" by Russell Gray is a captivating short story with elements of horror, sex, and suspense. First published in 1940 in the magazine Terror Tales. The story follows a young couple seeking solitude in the mountains, only to encounter a peculiar dog with human-like eyes. As the plot unfolds, they discover a local woman rumored to be a witch, and their encounter with her takes a dark turn.

The Lone Wolf: A Melodrama, by Louis Joseph Vance, was first published in 1914 and was the first of what eventually became an 8-book series. The main character, Michael Lanyard, also known as The Lone Wolf, is a jewel thief who in later stories reforms and becomes a private detective. In this first book, we learn of his difficult past and his journey that led to this pre-war moment, when he gets entangled with both a Paris crime mob and a woman, confronts his present and future course, and then seeks ways to escape his life of crime.

This is one of eight stories by Howard featuring Professor John Kirowan, an Irish aristocrat and seeker of arcane knowledge, and his associate John Conrad. This story relates to their investigation of the death of a mysterious and sinister hermit, John Grimlan.
