October 1932. At the beginning of the Great Depression, schools and universities all over America were cutting back, and even closing their campuses. Raji and Fuse, like so many other young people, were to be cut adrift. Having concentrated on nothing but academics for the past four years, they weren’t prepared for the brutal economic realities of a world sinking into misery and hopelessness.

Catalina Saylor is allowed to work in Qubit’s Incubator on probation for 30 days. If she proves her idea within that time, she will be allowed to stay and try to obtain a patent on her device. Qubit’s Incubator is a work place for bright people with good ideas who have no resources to develop their ideas. If they are accepted, they will be provided with a workspace, equipment, and other benefits for 30 days. If they are not successful within that time, they will leave with nothing.

The Dragonfly and Monarch are tiny drone aircraft designed to resemble actual insects. They can flitter around military installations and terrorists’ camps without being noticed while they collect video data about these installations and the people in charge. On their first mission over an isolated stretch of desert, their remote pilots, one American and one Russian, are drawn into a strange struggle to survive.
