Little is known of the life of Zen master Huang-Po (Obaku in Japanese). He was born in Fuzhou, China, and died about 850 AD. His main teacher was Pai Chang (Hyakujo) (720 - 814). The main source for Huang-Po's teaching is the Treatise of the Essentials of the Transmission of the Mind, compiled by his student, Pei Xiu. Huang-Po's teaching is focused on the concept of Mind, the essence of intrinsic Buddahood. In his retirement, he became well known as a lecturer on metaphysical subjects and developed a unique New Thought philosophy, which he discussed in a number of books. Troward held the word to be the expression of the immutable law of creation and supports his claim with extensive citations from the Bible.

His views on religion in general, and on Christianity in particular (as in this work), were considered "eccentric" by many of his contemporaries. So were his views on sex, which figures frequently as an example of the misery that Christian leaders and thinkers inflict, and for which he was often vilified. In regard to Christianity and, especially, Catholicism, Joseph McCabe was one of the most learned atheist writers of the 20th century. McCabe was a former Catholic priest, fluent in Latin and several other languages, who had taught philosophy and ecclesiastical history in a Catholic university. During his lifetime he wrote hundreds of books and pamphlets, and translated dozens of others, on various aspects of science and history, and a great many texts on religious topics.

In 1597, a series of witch trials were held in Scotland which resulted in about 200 executions. The Scottish King James VI (who became James I of England in 1603) took a great interest in the trials and was inspired to write Daemonologie, a text in which the detection and classification of acts of sorcery and the resulting judicial processes are discussed in the form of a Socratic dialogue.

Christian Daa Larson (1874- 1954) is considered to be one of the founders of the New Thought movement and was a significant influence on many New Thought authors. Between 1907 and 1920, he published over 20 books covering the application of New Thought principles to a variety of fields, including psychology, metaphysics, business, health, and personal success.

Joseph McCabe (1867-1955) was a Catholic priest and scholar who abandoned his faith in the 1890s and later became a very prominent secular activist. He published over 250 books and pamphlets, covering a wide range of genres, including history, politics, biography, and popular science.
