Retta Barre has never met a hero, except for the ones she reads about in her books. She does know they're strong and courageous. And handsome and pretty. Everything she's not. Her world doesn't expect much from her anyway. She's just a plain-looking 12-year-old who's more stubborn than brave. She owes what little strength she has to her dull daily chores on the Oregon trail. And yet, when her friends are missing, Retta doesn't think twice. She heads out to help them. She has no idea the danger that's about to come her way.

A simple trip into the prairie provides adventure and trouble. Soon Retta Barre is the talk of the wagon train. Her friends don't want to miss her next caper. And Retta certainly won't let them down.

This is a captivating, good-humored look at family life in a small farming community in Indiana in the early 1900s.

Trapper's treasure! The high point of any trapper's year was the summer rendezvous, the annual gathering where mountain men from all over the frontier met to trade the pelts they had risked their lives for. But for Kit Carson, the real danger lay in getting to the rendezvous. He was leading a party of trappers, all of them weighed down with a year's worth of furs. That was enough to make them a tempting target for any killer on the trail - especially when the trail led through Blackfoot territory.

Christopher "Kit" Carson was a true American legend: He could shoot a man at 200 yards, trap and hunt better than the most skilled Indian, and follow any trail - even in the dead of night. His courage and strength as an Indian fighter earned him respect throughout the West. But all of his skills were put to the test when he got caught up in a manhunt no one wanted him to make.

Anne is growing up and leaving the Island to spend four years of her life at Redmond College. She meets a wonderful new friend in Philippa Gordon, offspring to an old and exclusive "bluenose" family. Phil's family ties, combined with her beauty and charm, open the gates of all the social cliques and clubs at Redmond. And where Phil went, Anne went. Thus, Anne found her social pathway at Redmond made very easy while other freshettes were doomed to remain on the fringe of things.

This is the second story in the Anne of Green Gables series. Skinny little red-haired Anne has changed into a pretty 16-year-old and is all grown up - well, sort of grown up. The story opens with Anne as a school teacher at Avonlea school. When Anne reached the school that first morning, she was confronted by prim rows of "shining morning faces". She had sat up until nearly midnight composing a speech which she had revised and improved painstakingly. It was a wonderful speech with fine ideas. And then, she couldn't remember it!

Retta Barre has faced a dizzying prairie storm, a stubborn buffalo, and a murderous Indian twice. But that's nothing compared to what happens when her family is left alone in the middle of the prairie. One life-threatening danger after another, and Retta's in the middle of them all.
