Upproret som fick namnet Dackefejden startades eftersom bönderna var förbannade på kungens skattepolitik, kyrkopolitik och centralisering av makten. Så småningom kvästes upproret, Dacke dog i striderna och bönderna fick betala böter till kronan.

Vi får följa hans barndom, genom upproret mot danskarna i Dalarna fram till hans kröning den 6 juni 1523. Vidare genom reformationen, reduktionen och alla uppror mot honom, genomförda av de som inte gillade hans styre och önskan om förändring. Vid den första delens slut är relationen med Danmark mycket ansträngd, något som snart kom att leda till konflikt.
