Quella che un tempo era la cenerentola dei servizi pubblici è diventato uno dei problemi più pressanti del nostro tempo. Oggi i rifiuti evocano veleno e distruzione dell'ambiente; ogni italiano ne produce circa 1 kg e mezzo al giorno, di cui una buona parte finisce in discariche in via di esaurimento, quantità crescenti ma insufficienti vengono recuperate, e altre fanno perdere le tracce in modi alquanto sospetti.
