Andrew Jefferson V. Offutt (1934-2013) - Offutt began publishing in 1954 with the story "And Gone Tomorrow" in IF. He was a prolific writer of science-fiction tales, adventure/fantasy (Conan), and erotica/porn (writing as John Cleve and other pseudonyms). He wrote novels in the Thieves World series and many others. "And Gone Tomorrow" is the $1,000 prize-winning story in IF's College Science Fiction Contest...which answers the theme question: "What will life in America be like 100 years from now?"

The War of the Worlds is a science fiction and a horror story. Published in 1898, the story is still frightening. Imagine your government not being able to protect you, or a nuclear holocaust making you suddenly, should you survive, a refugee with no home, no community services, and very little hope, as you watch the conqueror decimate your country.

The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. The cause of Gregor's transformation is never revealed, and Kafka himself never gave an explanation. The rest of Kafka's novella deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being burdensome to his parents and sister, who are repulsed by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become.

Norman Gilligan provides just the right amount of British accent narrating The Time Machine, a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, published in 1895. Wells is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposefully and selectively. The term time machine, coined by Wells, is now universally used to refer to such a vehicle.

The Trial by Franz Kafka, narrated by award-winning narrator Mike Vendetti, begins like a nightmare - only K is awake, and he is being arrested and indicted on charges he never learns. He is caught up in a legal system that will destroy his life. This is a text that often is used in English classes because it is so deep. As was the case for many Victorian classic novels, H. G. Wells's The Time Machine was first published as a serial in the magazine The New Review. However for publication of The Time Machine as a book, an entire chapter was cut out by Wells himself. Here is that excised chapter, originally Chapter 11, detailing the Time Traveller's adventures in the far future, complete with an afterword tracing the history of this missing text.

The Last Man is an apocalyptic, dystopian science fiction novel by Mary Shelley that was first published in 1826. The book describes a future Earth at the time of the late 21st century, ravaged by an unknown pandemic that quickly sweeps across the world.
