As a member of the 58th Infantry Division, he received his baptism of fire during the 1940 invasion of France. East Germany only existed for a short 40 years, but in that time, the country’s secret police, the Stasi, developed a highly successful “church department” that - using persuasion rather than threats - managed to recruit an extraordinary stable of clergy spies. Detailliert berichten die Zeitzeugen vom Aufbau des Lagers, von Selektionen, der Arbeit der Lagerärzte, der Vernichtung in Gaskammern, von Krematorien und dem Schicksal inhaftierter Kinder.

Günter Guillaume war ganz nah dran an Willi Brandt. Als der DDR-Agent enttarnt wurde, trat der Kanzler zurück - es war die größte Spionageaffäre der deutschen Geschichte. Doch Guillaume war nur die Spitze des Eisbergs, es gab Tausende Stasi-Spitzel, die aus dem "Operationsgebiet" BRD berichteten. Über Jahre hinweg streuten sie aktiv Fehlinformationen, um die BRD-Regierungen und führende Persönlichkeiten zu diffamieren. Heribert Schwan hat über 80.000 Seiten Stasi-Akten gesichtet, um die Ausmaße der DDR-Spionage im Westen nachzuvollziehen.
