Shortly after Emperor Hadrian came to power in the early second century CE, he decided to seal off Scotland from Roman Britain with an ambitious wall stretching from sea to sea. What ultimately sealed their doom was the rumor that huge amounts of gold were available in regions south of the Andes Mountains.
