Prince Myshkin returns to Russia from an asylum in Switzerland. As he becomes embroiled in the frantic amatory and financial intrigues that center around a cast of brilliantly realized characters and that ultimately lead to tragedy, he emerges as a unique combination of the Christian ideal of perfection and Dostoevsky's own views, afflictions, and manners. His serene selflessness is contrasted with the worldly qualities of every other character in the novel.

The White Guard is less famous than Mikhail Bulgakov's comic hit, The Master and Margarita, but it is a lovely book, though completely different in tone. It is set in Kiev during the Russian revolution and tells a story about the war's effect on a middle-class family (not workers). The story was not politically correct and thereby contributed to Bulgakov's lifelong troubles with the Soviet authorities. Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka is a collection of short stories by Nikolai Gogol, written from 1831 to 1832. They appeared in various magazines and were published in book form when Gogol, who had spent his life in Ukraine up to the age of 19, was 22. He put his early impressions and memories of childhood into these pictures of peasant life. Pushkin began writing his first major work, Ruslan and Ludmila (1820), a kind of fairy story in verse, in 1817. It was based on Russian folktales told by his old nurse Arina Rodionovna. The Petty Demon is one of the funniest Russian novels. Leskov's story is a dramatic portrayal of the amoral, ambiguous, elemental force of sexual passion, as intense in its heat as in its coldness. In stylistic directness and narrative concentration, it is unique among his works. He wrote it while visiting relatives in Kiev, where he was given space in the university's punishment room. He later described how his hair stood on end as he worked on it alone in that unlikely place and swore he would never describe such horrors again.

It tells the true story of Hadji Murad (or Hadji Murat, alternatively), an Avar who commanded the peoples of Dagestan and Chechnya in their resistance against assimilation into the Russian empire. Tolstoy had first heard of Murad during his travels, and the author became inspired by Murad's refusal to give in to the demands of a corrupt world. Hadji Murad shares many of the same themes found in War and Peace.
