In questo racconto egli prende spunto dalla città perduta di Atlantide per riflettere su quello che, si dice, abbia portato quella grande civiltà alla catastrofe: una grande decadenza in cui le forze del Male avrebbero prevalso, e si sarebbero quindi attratte una giusta distruzione. Anche se, nella descrizione della città sommersa, c’è più fantasia che fantascienza, pure il fenomeno della proiezione del pensiero è assolutamente ben accetto anche ai lettori di fantascienza di quasi un secolo dopo.

Romanzo pubblicato nel 1867 e dedicato a tutti gli amanti delle avventure e delle esplorazioni geografiche. Seguendo alcune indicazioni di una richiesta di aiuto, trovata in una bottiglia, un gruppo di coraggiosi si pone in cerca del capitano Harry Grant, andando n cerca di mirabolanti avventure, che hanno come sfondo la Patagonia, l’Australia, e i feroci cannibali Maori della Nuova Zelanda, fino all’immancabile e sfolgorante lieto fine. Grandi descrizioni geografiche, il libro è avvincente e istruttivo. Adatto a tutti.

Questo “romanzo scientifico” è uno dei più famosi di Jules Verne, forse perché il misterioso personaggio del Capitano Nemo ha dato luogo a numerose successive produzioni artistiche.In realtà il romanzo consiste , non solo delle avventure dei tre protagonisti a bordo del Nautilus del capitano Nemo, ma di una lunga trattazione delle specie acquatiche presenti nei mari di tutto il globo, oltre che ad una visita alla misteriosa Atlantide.
