Innanför kapellets väggar, nu nedfläckade av blod, ligger två nunnor - en död, en allvarligt skadad - båda offer för ett skoningslöst, brutalt övergrepp. Det barbariska brottet verkar sakna motiv, och de äldre nunnorna i klostret är inte till mycket hjälp i polisutredningen. Men rättsläkaren Maura Isles obduktion av den döda kvinnan ger ett chockerande resultat: Den 20-åriga syster Camille födde ett barn innan hon mördades. Det makabra fallet tar en ny, häpnadsväckande vändning när en annan kvinna hittas mördad i en övergiven byggnad, med kroppen lemlästad till oigenkännlighet.
