This book is designed to trigger ASMR and help induce sleep. As a chronic insomniac, I have long sought an effective remedy. Traditional sleep meditations and soothing sounds only caused hyperfocusing and aggravation. Rather than instructing your mind to rest, this book is intended to give your mind lovely things to dwell on, allowing you to drift in and out of thought as you relax through the rhythmic tones.

The First World War shook loose the foundations not only of political structures, but also artistic conventions. New styles of poetry emerged which challenged not just the traditional presentation of poetry, but even the structure and function of language itself. Háfiz (1315-1390) was a lyric poet, a major figure in classical Persian literature. The compendious anthology of his poetry simply titled the Divan contains several hundred odes, from which this small selection was made by the translator. In the introduction Bicknell writes: ...we must look upon Háfiz as one of the few poets in the world who utters an unbroken strain of joy and contentment. His poverty was to him a constant fountain of satisfaction, and he frankly took the natural joys of life as they came....

Ballads of a Cheechako is the sophomore volume of Yukon inspired verse from Scottish/Canadian poet Robert W. Service. Published in 1909, it was an immediate success and catapulted Robert W. Service to a household name around North America. This volume contains 22 verses exploring interesting characters and life in the early days of Canada's last frontier. From the man who staked the northern lights, to the Mounted Police, to hard-luck prospectors, and beyond, this book contains much of the framework for the collective vision we all share when we hear the word Klondike.

"We Willed It Not" by John Freeman (1882-1937) was published in Poems of the Great War in 1914 on behalf of The Prince of Wales' national Relief Fund.

Siegfried Sassoon is one of the best-known of the plethora of First World War poets. His poem, Counter-Attack, was published in 1918 in Counter-Attack and other poems and describes the horror of life in the trenches of the Western Front.

"The Man Who Keeps His Head" by Harold Begbie (1871-1929) was published in Poems of the Great War in 1914 on behalf of The Prince of Wales' national Relief Fund. A reporter with the Daily Chronicle at the start of the war, Begbie wrote a number of recruiting poems and visited America to aid the recruitment effort there.

Robert Ernest Vernede [1875-1917] was an English poet and writer of short stories, most remembered as a war poet of WWI. Wounded at the Battle of the Somme in 1916, he recovered and returned to the front and was killed by machine-gun fire at Havrincourt in 1917. "England to the Sea" was published in Poems of the Great War, in 1914.

New Thought author and philosopher James Allen (1864 - 1912) is best known for his treatises on moral development and the power of thought, the most famous of which is As a Man Thinketh. In 1907 Allen also published a collection of poems, entitled Poems of Peace. Most of the pieces take the form of aphorisms and admonitions, delivered with the author's typical earnestness.

This universalist spiritual treatise is the best known work by the Lebanese-born poet and artist Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931). The central figure of the narrative is a fictional prophet, Al Mustafa, who is about to set off on a journey back to his homeland. His departure is delayed when he encounters a group of people who urgently seek his advice on a wide range of topics ranging from the mundane to the highest flights of spiritual introspection.

The subject and argument of the poem are clear from the title. However, unlike Juvenal, Johnson espoused the view that Christian values are an essential aspect of a life well lived. While Johnson passes harsh judgement on the foolishness of greed and social pretensions, his scorn is much tempered by that natural compassion that has made him one of the most lovable figures in English literature.

In this haunting poem, a guest on his way to a wedding reception is stopped by the Ancient Mariner. With his "glittering eye" he transfixes the guest and then relates a compelling tale of a sea voyage fraught with strange happenings. The Mariner tells of journeying through tyrannous storms to ice mast-high, through mist and snow to the deadly inertia of the doldrums. There are unearthly visitations, ill omens, and supernatural happenings - all leading to the revelation of the Mariner's strange fate.
