In this tale, our narrator is deemed guilty of an unnamed crime and condemned to death by a tortuous method of which he can only imagine. In complete darkness in a room with only a large pit in the center and rats to keep him company, he soon realizes there is a large bladelike pendulum hanging above him, slowly getting closer to cutting through his chest.

Mr. Abney, the owner of Aswarby, a tall, square, red-brick mansion built in the reign of Anne, proved himself to be a very evil man. No one knew more of the religious beliefs of the later pagans than did the owner of Aswarby. He performed hideous experiments on such persons as could conveniently be removed without occasioning a gap in society. The final "victim" - to employ a word repugnant in the highest degree to his feelings - must be his cousin, Stephen Elliott, a 12-year-old orphan.

While not being not particularly scary by the standards of today many of the ghost stories of the Victorian Era are very entertaining, and represent escapist literature of the highest quality. In To Be Taken With a Grain of Salt, which first appeared in the 1865 Christmas Edition of All the Year Round, the master novelist presents a lively portrait of the spectre of a murder victim with a desire for vengeance.

Today we have ghosts that haunted our ancestors, as well as our own modern revenants, and there appears to be no earthly use trying to banish or exorcise them by such a simple strategy as refusing to believe in them. Since man knows that whether or not he has seen a ghost, presently he will become one, and thus he has become fascinated with the subject. Therefore he creates ghosts, not merely in his own image, but according to his dreams of power.
