The last three parts, "Transcendence", "Beatitude", and "Peace", represent the divine life - calm, wise, and beautiful - of the sage and savior. The middle part, "Transmutation", is the transitional stage between the two; it is the alchemic process linking the divine with the human life.

Wells (who achieved fame as a pioneer in the science fiction genre of writing) details his beliefs in a "modern religion", which involves the eschewing of rites and dogmatic beliefs for a more universal theology. He rejects certain aspects of dominant Christian dogmas such as the idea of the Holy Trinity and the omniscience and omnipresence of God and outlines his vision of an all-encompassing, all-inclusive society guided by devotion to serving God.
