One day a white, one-eyed parrot flies into the Dream Caf. Chester's mom says that the day something rhymes with orange, they can keep the parrot. Since nothing does, she comes up with the name Lornge, and the parrot becomes the newest member of the Dumbello family.

Hilda is a small, speckled hen. She is brave and very single-minded. When she hears that her aunt has just hatched five baby chicks, she is very excited, and can’t wait to go and see them. There is a problem; however her aunt lives five miles away. How will Hilda ever travel all the way to her farm? But she has her heart set on getting there, and goes out to hitch a lift on a rubbish lorry, a fire engine, a scooter and even a steam roller!

Granny Diamond once saw an owl perched among its branches and she has loved the tree ever since. It means the world to her. But her neighbour, Mr Rock, wants to cut it down. Why does he dislike the owl tree so much? Does the tree have a secret to tell Joe? And how can he, a boy too scared even to climb the tree, be the one to save it?
