Charles Spurgeon was one of the most well-known preachers in the 19th century. Yet more than anything, he desired that all who knew him would desire to know Christ. Before his congregation at the Metropolitan Tabernacle he said to himself, “My soul, never be satisfied within a shadowy Christ.” He points to Philippians 3:10, where Paul says he gave up everything “that I may know [Christ]”; Spurgeon urges all who listen to do likewise.

Nineteenth-century preacher Gardiner Spring left the legal profession when he felt called to ministry. In this sermon, he describes his belief in the selectivity of God’s grace. He argues against “the modern notion that God saves all he is able to save; and that if any are lost, it is because his almighty power cannot convert them”. Jumping off from the example of Cain and Abel, Spring makes his case for predestination.

The period known as the Avignon Papacy began in 1309, when Pope Clement V relocated the seat of papal power to Avignon, France. The French monarchy slowly gained control over the papacy during this time, and as they did, corruption and greed grew in the church. The troubadour and priest Raimon de Cornet staunchly opposed the Avignon Papacy for these reasons. He summarized his grievances in this noteworthy poem, in which he states, “I see the pope his sacred trust betray, / For while the rich his grace can gain alway, / His favors from the poor are aye withholden.”

Gardiner Spring, a 19th-century American minister, did not shy away from preaching on hard topics. The notable German historian and monk Ekkehard of Aurach was also a crusader. He wrote a comprehensive world history text, but upon returning from a pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1101, he rewrote his portion on the First Crusade. "On the Opening of the First Crusade" is an excerpt from his larger work on the war, titled Hierosolymita. Modern scholars of history hold his contributions in high respect for his meticulous attention to detail and broad scope.

"Against the Infidels” is Fulcher of Chartres' eyewitness account of Pope Urban II’s call-to-arms in 1095. This speech launched the First Crusade, but the several historical transcripts record it slightly differently. Fulcher’s account includes a section in which Urban assures crusaders they would be granted redemption from sins in exchange for their service. His is considered the most definitive eyewitness record of the speech, in contrast to Robert the Monk’s more dramatic interpretation of the event.
