The King James Version of the Bible changed and helped create the modern English language. Just as with Shakespeare, so this magnificent text was planted deep in the English-speaking people’s consciousness, and there it would grow and thrive. We hear its influence in America, in Britain, in Australia. We hear it in India and in Africa. And here we are, at a point of origin and the heart.

In 1597, a series of witch trials were held in Scotland which resulted in about 200 executions. The Scottish King James VI (who became James I of England in 1603) took a great interest in the trials and was inspired to write Daemonologie, a text in which the detection and classification of acts of sorcery and the resulting judicial processes are discussed in the form of a Socratic dialogue.

The five books of Moses are referred to as the Pentateuch, and encompasses the first five books of the Old Testament: Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These books give the foundation for Jewish law and religion, and outlined the covenants given to Jewish people by their God. It is also largely the story of Moses, the man chosen to lead God’s people into the home he had placed for them.

The Book of Psalms is the longest book of the Bible and contains 150 Psalms. Psalms were songs written as expressions of praise, declarations of emotions, laments of sorrow or guilt, celebrations of events, and more. The Psalms were written by many authors, and many of them are attributed to King David. Whether he did write them is still debated by scholars, but many of the Psalms reference moments in his life and kingship.

Beginning with a magnificent prologue, Shakespearean actor Nigel Gore's beautiful narration of the Gospel According to St. John makes this famous story wholly accessible as possible to the modern ear.

In this timely and important new recording, The Gospel According to Matthew sparkles with new light in the hands of award-winning narrator Alison Larkin. The prophet Hosea has much to say about the sinfulness of Israel, but he also has much to say about the faithfulness of God. As the Israelites worship other gods and move further away from their Creator, God's judgment comes upon them. After judgment, however, God displays acts of mercy as he acts tenderly to his people, like a loving parent would. Listen to Hosea as he reminds Israel of God's faithfulness and speaks prophesies concerning the redemption to come in latter days.

The prophet Micah scolds Israel and Judah for their idolatry and injustice to the poor. The Assyrians are about to invade and the two Jewish nations will have to suffer for their sinfulness. Thankfully, God’s judgment is seasoned with mercy and he will not break the covenant with His people.

An epistle penned by James, the brother of Jesus. Like the epistles of Paul his letter was a collection of thoughts used to encourage those who followed Christ. This collection is believed to have been pennedprior to Paul's writings. Narrated by Glenn Hascall.

The book of Titus provides readers with an overview of leadership within the Christian Church. Philemon is a personal letter from the Apostle Paul to Philemon, asking him to receive his slave, Onesimus, back as a brother in Christ and no longer a slave. Two smaller books that hold great teaching for all eras.

The gospel is counterintuitive to humans. We are used to earning almost everything in our lives. In the book of Romans, Paul makes it clear that we cannot earn our way to God, in fact, even the “good” deeds we do are like filthy rags before the Lord. Listen to Paul as he teaches us that we are more sinful than we could every imagine, but also more loved than we could ever imagine.

After admonishing believers in Corinth for their sinful ways and abuse of grace, Paul writes a second letter, commending them for their positive response to his first letter. He expresses his joy in hearing that they’ve repented and embraced his teachings. Paul then goes on to encourage believers to “...take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:5). Listen as he reminds the church at Corinth that God has made them a new creation in Christ.

God’s providence always comes through, even in the worst of situations. This is something we learn in the life of Queen Esther. A woman of strength and humility, Queen Esther endures the struggles that come with living a life of obedience to God. She knows that God’s hand is on her and that His plans are not moved, not even by the actions of evil men.

While there is suffering, evil, sickness, and death in this world, the book of Joel reminds us that we have an everlasting hope through it all. Joel warns the people of Judah as a horrifying locust plague has come upon them. He urges the people to repent and return to God, predicting that this is just the beginning of their judgment. Thankfully, Joel’s prophecies do not end there. He continues to teach the people about the promise of hope that lies ahead in the kingdom of the Messiah. A sequel to the Gospel of Luke, this book gives a history of the early church and provides a heavy emphasis on the work of the Holy Spirit. In many ways, Acts serves as a transition from law-keeping to grace and faith in Christ. Listen to Acts and learn about how God uses the Holy Spirit to transform the hearts of believers and then uses them to fulfill his plan of restoration.
