Als die Lokalzeitung über ein Geisterhaus im Nachbardorf berichtet, ist Agathas Neugier geweckt. Während sie dort herumschnüffelt, stellt sich allerdings heraus, dass keineswegs ein Geist sein Unwesen treibt. Stattdessen spielt jemand der alten und allseits unbeliebten Hausbesitzerin Mrs. Witherspoon Streiche. Und dann ist die alte Dame plötzlich tot. Das ist für Agatha natürlich ein noch größerer Ansporn: Schließlich macht es viel mehr Spaß, ein Verbrechen aufzuklären, als einen Geist zu jagen!

Geborgt ist noch lange nicht geschenkt! Als Gloria French nach Piddlebury zieht, ist sie dort auf Anhieb beliebt. Sie scheint eine Wohltäterin par excellence zu sein, die Spenden für die Kirche sammelt und sich um die älteren Menschen kümmert. Aber sie hat leider auch die schlechte Angewohnheit, sich Dinge zu "leihen", ohne sie zurückzugeben. Da wundert es niemanden, dass sie eines Tages tot aufgefunden wird, augenscheinlich vergiftet. Die Dörfler trauern nicht allzu sehr um Gloria. Gemeinderat Jerry Tarrant beauftragt dennoch Agatha Raisin, den Mörder zu finden.

Dumm ist allerdings, dass einer der Preisrichter stirbt und in Agathas Quiche Gift gefunden wird.

Agatha ist kreuzunglücklich, nachdem James sie verlassen hat. Erst die Ankunft des neuen Kaplans kann sie aus der miesen Stimmung herausreißen. Mit seinem blonden Haar, den blauen Augen und dem perfekten Mund hat der Kirchenmann es allerdings diversen weiblichen Gemeindemitgliedern angetan. Bei allem Charme jedoch ist irgendetwas an dem Kaplan merkwürdig ... Und dann liegt er plötzlich tot im Arbeitszimmer des Vikars, und Agatha macht sich mit ihrem Nachbarn John auf die Suche nach dem Mörder.
