The Battle of Okinawa was the deadliest campaign of the Pacific during World War II. The Americans had come back from the demoralizing defeat at Pearl Harbor to mount a ferocious attack against the Japanese. To be able to invade Japan, the Americans had to take Okinawa. But the Japanese, determined to defend their homeland and preserve their way of life, would fight to the death against the invaders. As the Army and Marines fought bloody battles to gain Okinawa inch by inch, the Navy was subjected to kamikaze attacks.

In the midst of World War I, the Easter Rising took place in Dublin and throughout Ireland in April 1916. The revolutionary movement faced many problems from the beginning, including splintered leadership, disorganized support, opposition from moderate supporters of home rule, and prepared retaliation from the British.

John Wycliffe was known as the “Morning Star” of the Reformation. His doctrines of strict adherence to the Bible and his attacks on the wealth and corruption of the Catholic Church would be the spark that would later ignite the fires of the Protestant Reformation.

William Wallace; if ever there was a champion in the annals of Scottish history, he was it. Known as a proud Scot who rose through the ranks to challenge the English king, Wallace was a mere man who became larger than life - large enough even for the likes of Mel Gibson to play him in Braveheart for movie-going audiences on the silver screen. But who was William Wallace? What separates the real man from the myth?

The Great Depression was one of the most trying eras in American history. All aspects of the US were affected. After the stock market crash of 1929, the nation was thrust into a decade of turmoil and change - in government, the economy, and culture. Many of the changes brought about by the Great Depression remain today.

Long-time adversaries Germany and the Soviet Union put their hostilities to the test in World War II. Despite a temporary truce in the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Non-aggression Pact in 1939, the Germans and the Soviets knew that the time was coming when they would face one another on the battlefield. But Operation Barbarossa was the beginning of the downfall of the Third Reich, as the dogged Russian refusal to succumb and the menace of the Russian winter demonstrated that the Soviet Union would not surrender as other European nations had done.

Discover the remarkable history of the Battle of the Wilderness...The year 1864 saw Abraham Lincoln facing an increasingly unpopular war with too few Union victories, and a presidential re-election campaign pitting him against the Democratic challenger and former Union commander General George McClellan. The outlook for both looked dire for Lincoln.

Discover the remarkable life of Sacagawea... Sacagawea is widely known as the Native American woman who helped guide Lewis and Clark across the western frontiers of North America in the early 1800s. It was an extraordinary journey that took a small band of explorers thousands of miles into uncharted territory, across treacherous mountain passes, vast plains, and all the way to the shores of the Pacific Ocean. This was indeed a remarkable and historic period for both Sacagawea and the rapidly growing nation of the United States.

The assassination of Austria-Hungary's Archduke Franz Ferdinand didn't just ignite the fuse to the tinderbox that was Europe in the early years of the twentieth century. When war was declared and the soldiers set off to fight the "war to end all wars," World War I realigned nations, sent their economies reeling, and toppled thrones and classes. Hungary was a particularly vivid example of how quickly a nation's fate could plummet from empire to supplicant.

Discover the remarkable life of Johann Sebastian Bach... During his lifetime, Johann Sebastian Bach was a Konzertmeister who played eloquent music for the masses at church, but his unique, free-flowing style was not always appreciated when his day job called for him to play traditional church standards. He was jailed by a duke, passed over for promotions, and told repeatedly to tone it down. Yes, for most of his life, Bach was more akin to an unsung hero than the celebrated genius we know him as today. That recognition would come, but not until long after he was gone.

Discover the remarkable life of Chester A. Arthur... Chester A. Arthur is not a name that immediately comes to mind when one thinks of great American presidents. He is, in many ways, the forgotten man of the White House, and most Americans would probably struggle to place him, let alone recall what he actually did. And yet his story is remarkable and, in many ways, surprising.

As the daughter of a decorated general in the Imperial Russian army, Alexandra Kollontai was a member of the elite from birth. From that comfortable perch, she might easily have lived out her days in the drawing rooms and social circles of St. Petersburg's upper classes. Instead, she devoted her life to tearing that world apart.

Discover the remarkable life of James A. Garfield... James A. Garfield was the 20th President of the United States. He held that title for only a few brief months before falling victim to an assassin’s bullet. Like Abraham Lincoln before him, Garfield was cut down by a gunman before his vision could be realized. Yet while Lincoln is immortalized, Garfield has been all but forgotten, a fate as unfair as the one that ended his life. In his short life, Garfield established himself as a well-known figure in American politics.

Discover the remarkable life of Boudica... Boudica was the queen of her people, a proud Celtic tribe in the east of England, and she took that responsibility seriously. In a time when the Romans sought to add the British Isles to their ever-growing empire, she stood as the last line of defense between her tribe and total subjugation. And so, with nothing left to lose, she did what few had ever dared: she led her people in open revolt against the mightiest empire on earth.

Few women in history have inspired such contradictory reactions as Catherine de Medici. To her admirers, she was a brilliant stateswoman and a steadying force in an era of great religious conflict. To her enemies, she was something far darker: a scheming foreigner, an Italian serpent coiled at the heart of the French court. What almost everyone agreed on was that she was extraordinary.

Betty Ford was the First Lady of President Gerald Ford. Many biographies seem to focus on just that one aspect of her life, but as consequential as her time in the White House was, she was more than that. Since her earliest days as a little girl in Michigan, Betty Ford lived a life that was full of learning, full of adventure, and full of service. She was a dancer who graced stages in New York City. She was a woman who rebuilt her life after a difficult first marriage.

Discover the remarkable life of Butch Cassidy... Few children dream of growing up to rob banks and hold up trains, and Butch Cassidy was no exception. His transformation from an idealistic ranch hand to one of the most legendary outlaws of the American West was a slow, steady slide into a life of crime, shaped by choices that seemed small at the time but would alter the course of his entire existence.

Discover the remarkable life of John Belushi... John Belushi lived his life on his own terms. He didn't answer to anyone, and he didn't hold back for an instant. He was an extroverted performer from the earliest days of his youth, always eager to get attention—some might even say approval—from his peers. It was this desire for recognition that drove him to push as hard as he did. Belushi pushed himself until he was able to use a combination of charisma, talent, and sheer willpower to make a name for himself on the national stage.

Discover the remarkable life of George Armstrong Custer... George Armstrong Custer is remembered for his last stand—that fateful day at the Little Bighorn when he and his unit were caught in an ambush that would end their lives. But Custer's story was much more than that single moment of catastrophe. From a mischievous farm boy in Ohio to a struggling West Point cadet, Custer lived a life of constant drama. He became the Union's youngest general, a daring Civil War hero who rode fearlessly into battle with his signature golden locks flowing behind him.

Discover the remarkable life of Calamity Jane... Calamity Jane was an icon of the Wild West, and she lived her life just as free and wild as the Wild West stage shows she later performed in. Part of this wildness was not by choice but born of necessity. Her parents both passed when she was a young girl, forcing her to find a way to make it on her own. It was during this struggle for survival that she first embraced a free and unfettered lifestyle, learning to ride, shoot, and fend for herself in ways that would have been considered scandalous for women of her era.
