In this book's introduction, an autobiographical account of the author's years as an American Custom House official, Hawthorne describes how he came across a parchment from which fell a fraying piece of fabric, fantastically embroidered and inscribed with the scarlet letter A. He found himself compelled to tell the story of its owner, Hester Prynne, a young English woman who had lived in 17th-century Boston at the time when Puritan extremism - that which led to the infamous witch trials of Salem - was at its height.

The travelling tobacco pedlar, Dominicus Pike, learns from a traveller he meets on the road, of the terrible murder of Mr. Higginbotham of Kimballton the previous evening. Once the traveller has gone, it puzzles Dominicus that the news could have travelled so quickly from Kimballton which is sixty miles away. Nevertheless, Dominicus passes on the sensational news everywhere he goes and enjoys being the centre of attention.

The majority of Hawthorne's works centre on New England and have a Puritan inspiration and outlook, with their inherent evil and sin of humanity. This volume centres on his short stories which are beautifully crafted pieces layered with characters ill at ease with their path through life.

First published in 1837, Mrs. Bullfrog is a humorous morality tale on the subject of marriage, cautioning that a happy marriage should be based on realistic assessments of virtues. Mr. Bullfrog, a shopkeeper, finds his perfect match late in life, and soon the two are wed. Then there’s an accident and the carriage in which they’re riding overturns...a turn of events which brings out an entirely different Mrs Bullfrog.
