This book, a true spiritual classic, consists of notes of several conversations had with, and letters written by, Nicholas Herman, of Lorraine, a humble man of little education. After having served as a soldier and a footman, Herman was admitted as a lay brother to the order of the barefooted Carmelites at Paris in 1666, where he took the name "Brother Lawrence." The conversations are supposed to have been recorded by Joseph de Beaufort, who later became vicar general to the Archbishop of Paris.

First published in 1874, "The City of Dreadful Night" is an extended poetic meditation on melancholy, or what is generally termed today as depression. Thomson's "city" is the "città dolente" of Dante, the domain of souls trapped in a round of ceaseless misery. However, the inhabitants of Thomson's world endure a torment more subtle and more devastating than the acute and picturesque tortures of Dante's Inferno - a complete loss of purpose and a relentless draining of energy, a desperate and ever wakeful ennui.

In this work James Allen delineates the internal pilgrimage that commences with the cultivation of faith and courage and ends in knowledge and victory. In the words of the author: "Every being lives in his own mental world. His joys and sorrows are the creations of his own mind and are dependent upon the mind for their existence. In the midst of the world, darkened with many sins and sorrows, in which the majority live, there abides another world, lighted up with shining virtues and unpolluted joy, in which the perfect ones live."

Initially published in 1914, Papa was the first major dramatic work by playwright and poet Zoë Akins (1886-1958). A subtle but quietly savage comedy of manners, the play was not a commercial success but has since come to be regarded as a masterpiece. As a skillfully drawn portrait of genteel corruption, it ranks with the works of masters of dramatic satire like Moliere and Oscar Wilde.

First published in 1857, The Flowers of Evil (Les Fleurs du Mal) is a poetry collection by Charles Baudelaire. In 1909, Cyril Scott published a translation of 54 of the poems, which is the subject of this recording.

The collection Poems of Peace consists of the long lyrical/dramatic poem Eolaus, together with 37 shorter poems. As in all his other works, the author's focus is on the inevitable spiritual pilgrimage that all men must, sooner or later, undergo. In verse that is trenchant and often compellingly aphoristic, Allen describes the pitfalls and glories of the path, occasionally genuflecting to the masters who have blazed the way for humanity to follow.

Like Wallace D. Wattles, the reclusive James Allen (1864-1912) has posthumously become an icon in the self-help industry and particularly for practitioners who promote a life of unrestrained abundance. Ironically, Allen actually recommended a life of simplicity and plain thinking and considered that a state of unshakeable peace and effortless wisdom constituted true wealth.

In this short treatise, James Allen examines those spiritual qualities that are traditionally associated with the heart: love, compassion, gentleness, good will, and patience. In the words of the author: "He who aspires to the attainment of the Higher Life in its completion - who would perceive with unveiled vision the true order of things and the meaning of life - let him abandon all the wrong conditions of the heart, and persevere unceasingly in the practice of good."

As a vivid portrait of alienation and despair few narratives have surpassed Henry Lawson’s depiction of the grinding poverty endured by many settlers in the Australian outback. In the simple and direct language of his stoic narrator, Joe Wilson, he delivers an unforgettable depiction of a pioneering way of life, but one completely stripped of glamour or glory. Generally considered to be one of the finest Australian short stories ever written, Water Them Geraniums is read by Australian narrator, Denis Daly.

This new translation seeks to highlight the vigor and immediacy of Virgil's epic while still respecting the grandeur of the original language.

Little is known of Norton F. Hazeldine, whose version of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam was published in 1908. It is not stated whether this was an actual translation, although it appears to be an extensive reworking of the fourth or fifth edition of the translation by Edward Fitzgerald.

A Doll's House, published in 1879, was the earliest of Ibsen's "social dramas", and the first of his works to attract attention outside of Scandinavia. The central theme of the play is a woman's right to individual self-development, and represents, as humourist Stephen Leacock observed of many Ibsen plays, "a profound problem stated but not solved".

John Pollen (1855-1923) was an official in the Indian Civil Service. A keen linguist, he learned Russian, Esperanto, and Persian and in 1915 published an English translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. His collection contains 158 quatrains and includes a set of seven prefatory quatrains by Andrew Lang and a foreword by the Aga Khan.

The best and most engaging portraits of the Romans as living people are to be found in the works like those of the four poets featured in this recording. In Howard Felperin’s lively translations, these pieces become verbal postcards of the era, revealing in exquisite detail the passion and the grief, the joy and the pain experienced by the people of Rome as they deal with the inevitable fascination of love as it permeates their daily lives.

The Shining Gateway can be seen as a prose commentary by James Allen on the experience of the pilgrimage described his dramatic poem "Eolaus". In search of enlightenment, the restless pilgrim, after having exhausted the delights of material creation, finally submits himself to the instruction of a reclusive sage.

This is one of the last works of James Allen and was first published posthumously in 1913. As Lily Allen says in her preface: "Like all his works it is eminently practical. He never wrote theories, or for the sake of writing, or to add another to his many books; but he wrote when he had a message, and it became a message only when he had lived it out in his own life, and knew that it was good. Thus he wrote facts, which he had proven by practice."
